Shayla Brubacher altered a favorite family recipe so that she could have a similar dish. The family recipe is given first and then the adapted low protein recipe.
Regular Family Recipe
3 T butter
2-1/2 c uncooked macaroni
1 tsp. seasoning salt
3 tsp. pepper
1/2 lb. Velveeta* Cheese
1 qt. milk
Melt butter in a 2-1/2 qt. baking dish. Pour macaroni into the baking dish and stir until coated with butter. Slice cheese and cut each slice in fourths. Add salt, pepper, cheese and cold milk to the macaroni. Bake uncovered at 325E for 12 hours or in the microwave for 10 min. on high, 10 min. on med. and 10 min. on low. Do not stir while baking; this is golden brown and creamy when finished. Other seasonings can be added such as parsley or onion salt.
Low Pro Recipe
2 T butter (margarine)
1-1/2 c low pro macaroni
2 tsp. seasoning salt
Dash of pepper
4 gm Velveeta* Cheese
3/4 c water
3/4 c non-dairy creamer
Follow instructions for family recipe, using a 12 qt. casserole. Cut the cheese into very small pieces and be sure they are distributed evenly throughout the dish. Bake 1 hour in the oven at 325 ¡or in the microwave for 5 min. on high, 5 min. on med. and 5 min. on low.
We use the Wel-plan macaroni but other brands should be OK. If you use margarine instead of butter, subtract .2 gm of protein. Reduce the amount of cheese to 10 gm. and subtract another .7 gm protein.
The MSUD Family Support Group is currently funding several research projects and we are proactively looking for researchers interested in developing new treatments or finding a cure for MSUD. Significant funding is necessary if we are to accomplish this goal.
